Jesus gave an invitation to those who are bolt down by burdens in Matthew 11:28-30 to come to Him. He then advised them to put on His yoke. What an oxymoron. These statements deserve our careful examinations because many of us experience heaviness of heart every now and then. These words from the Lord Jesus could change things around.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
First, the Lord Jesus said, "Come to me". Anyone in any condition can come to our Lord Jesus. He promised, "I will give you rest." Not "I may" but "I will". He continued to ask listeners to take His yoke upon themselves and learn from Him. This involvement with Jesus has changed everything. The Lord Jesus desires participation with Him. It reminds us when God involves Adam in naming the animals. God can do a better job in naming the animals but He wants Adam's participation.
1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. Our Lord Jesus always obey His Father, even to the cross.
Our obedience to the commandments is not to gain acceptance, which is purely by Grace but to experience freedom in Christ from the snare of sin. Sin bound us but obedience frees us. Romans 6:16.
The Lord Jesus urges participants to learn of Him in meekness and lowliness of heart. Learn meekness and humility that will bring rest unto our souls.
We are all therefore learners. Learners embark on a journey and grow each day. When learners claimed to know everything the learning stops.
