Eating Fish and Learning

You have to learn how to eat the flesh and spit out the bones. This proverb not only applies to the contents of learning but also the attitudes of learning. There is no lack of good bible resources these days. "Rabbi Google" becomes a quick fix for many students of the Bible. However, the term, "don't believe everything the internet says" still is a piece of good advice. The fact is that we can make the Bible says what we want it to say. You can use verses of the Bible to justify what you have already pre-conceived in your mind. That is why we must learn to approach God's word with certain right attitudes. When you eat fish, always have an attitude of exercising caution to avoid swallowing the bones.  1) Humility - you will be surprised that at times pride is the reason why we seek to get answers from the Bible. We want to look good, have the right answers and to have admirers and followers or perhaps to get social media "like". Students of the Bible must learn that the objective of studying the word of God is not to become know all, but to become an obedient child of God. To please God our Heavenly Father (Ephesians 2:10). 2) Honesty - we have to be honest that we are humans and we cannot fully figure out God. God is a superior being than us and hence we must approach Him acknowledging that. Honesty is being real. We cannot deceive God or try to manoeuvre His will. He is God and He will fulfil what He says. Our role is to get the facts right so that we do not misread Him.   2 Peter 3:14-18 14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. 17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. 18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.
May we learn to take in what is true and good. May we learn to reject what is prideful and false.
