Easter, Pastor and Toilet Gutter

It was Easter and the church was packed with programs including water baptism for 3 candidates and commissioning of the new lay pastor, who happens to be me.

The hall was filled with people, 83 of them in total and the events went on well. The resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ was the theme of the message taken from 1 Corinthians 15:12-20.

Pastor Bob did a great job in conducting the Baptism and the Holy Communion. Both important sacraments laid down by our Lord Jesus Christ. Finally, the commission of the lay pastor which harness the approval and support of the community of people we have been journeying with.

There were a few members who congratulated me. I humbly thank them and reminded them that this is a commission to serve and not a promotion. It is a call to serve in greater awareness and responsibility to the community.

Arriving at home I helped my son replace his iPhone battery and replacing the iPhone battery is what a good lay pastor does. Not long after a commotion was heard in the kitchen. The kitchen was flooding. As a hands-on husband, I went into the kitchen and took control. There is a choke in the toilet gutter (not toilet bowl) and our water filtered vacuum cleaner should do the job. I tried sucking out the water but it filled the tank so fast it did not work out. AIR can be blown into the choked gutter with the same vacuum cleaner, pressuring the choke so as to clear it. It was nothing as I expected. The pressure was so strong it expelled dirt and substances you don't even know existed in your piping system out from various outlets. The same substances landed on me. It was messy and not to mention, smelly. I continued doing that a few times hoping to clear the choke but of no avail. Then an idea came. I tied a squid jig to a pole and start twisting the pole in the deepest part of the gutter. Upon pulling up the pole with an attachment of a bunch of hair-like substances. I heard water streaming fluidly and the water level in the gutter went down. Problem solved and cleaning began. You appreciate your helper most when it comes to cleaning.

What a day. I reflected on the day learning that circumstances can change in an instance. What is important, is to remember who you are in Christ and how you respond to the circumstances. I opened a gift I received this morning and this was the quote:

The secret of happiness is not doing what one likes to do, but in liking what one has to do - Sir James M Barrie.

May this day be yet another day we be truthful to God. As Titus 1:15 says, "Unto the pure all things are pure."
