Milo Peng (Ice)

I was a junior technician in the Airforce when one of the senior invited everyone to his birthday celebration. The party was held at FIRE discotheque. After I followed the Lord, I have never set foot in a discotheque as it was known to be a rowdy and complicated place.

When my senior invited me to the party, I accepted the invitation and decided I should be there to celebrate his birthday. After all, one should feel honoured to be invited.

Stories were share how some of my colleagues made a fool of themselves when they were drunk. It was a common affair when they frequent a discotheque. People forced each other to drink in places like that. That is how to have a fun time then. As a follower of Jesus, I felt like sheep heading out to the wilderness.

I remembered telling myself that I will not touch any alcohol before heading off that night. For a start, I ride a motorbike and it does not blend well with alcohol. Secondly, I remembered the simple verse that Paul urged followers not to be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Finally, I did prepare a gift for my senior.

The ambient was very unfamiliar as I do not frequent discotheque for a simple reason that I cannot dance. I also most got lost until I saw familiar faces and made my way to sit with them. Most of my colleagues showed up. I greeted the birthday boy and handed my gift. Just then the waiter showed up to take order. While everyone ordered liqueur and beer, I ordered a Milo Peng (Iced Milo). The waiter gave me a strange look at confirmed my order for the second time. This time he was certain that an alien had visited FIRE.

I left that night joyful. Joyful because I stayed true to my faith and my Lord. It was an enjoyable night and though there were one or two people teasing me about the drink I ordered, I paid no attention. Some even offered to buy me drinks. I declined politely reminding them I was a two wheeler. Deep in my heart, I knew the Lord was pleased.

Many years later this event came back to me as I read Daniel. Daniel was a prophet who was outstanding in stature in his time. How did Daniel do it? The scripture gave us the answer - Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself with the kings food. (Daniel 1:8). It dawned upon me that that is the key to spiritual consecration! Spiritual walk is never a passive and lazy walk. It is very intentional and focused. We may not all live like that now but your spiritual awareness will affect what you purpose in your heart. If God is real to you, you will watch your steps!

May we learn to ponder about spiritual truth daily. God is everywhere. If He is indeed everywhere, what would your posture be? What will you purpose in your heart to do or not to do today?
