Needful Thing

Mary and Martha's story is a familiar one. Our Lord Jesus, was a prominent figure, decided to visit them. Martha did the most natural thing. Their culture expected them to treat a guest well and that includes clearing up space, washing of visitor's feet, and preparing a simple meal. A lot to do for a single person. Martha was not alone, she had a sister Mary. You can sense the tone of unhappiness when Mary was sitting with the Lord listening to him. Chit chatting at the wrong time! When Martha approach them, it was a subtle complaint. "Don't you care Lord that I was left to work alone? Ask Mary to help me!" Most of us will advise Mary better to help her sister first and chat later. But the Lord Jesus' reply surprised us.
“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:41-42‬ ‭ Instead of asking Mary to help, the Lord insisted that Martha was distracted by many things but only one thing was needful. The one thing that every human need. The one thing that revitalizes our spiritual being. The one thing that is considered better than anything else we do. Spending time with him! The Lord did not rebuke Martha for being busy but lose the opportunity. The Lord of the universe seated at your home and you were busy with every other issue instead of communication with Him? What a great loss! May we not be distracted by doing the natural thing. May we be mindful that the Lord of the universe is just a prayer away. The Lord is always near. May we be conscious of the one Needful Thing
