Be Holy

In Leviticus 10:10, we see an important aspect of God. He required His people to put a difference between holy and unholy and between clean and unclean. The book then continued with a list of food that is kosher and those which are not, ending with a command in chapter 11:44 be holy; for I am holy. There is progress to become holy. This process goes from unclean → clean, unholy → holy (Godliness). First thing first, how can an unclean thing become clean? By Atonement. (Exodus 29:36) How then can clean but unholy becomes holy? By Consecration. (Setting apart for God) (2 Chronicles 29:31) These 2 signs of progress have great implications for Christian living. All believers are cleansed by the precious blood of Jesus. Hence they are clean before God. No unclean things or persons can come near a Holy God. There must be an atonement made before he/she can do so. 1 Peter 1:15-16 urges people of God to go further - to be holy. The Israelites did not become holy automatically when they were redeemed from Egypt. They were given specific rules to live by. Similarly, many Christians thought they are already made holy through Jesus. That is not the case. If it were, why does Peter urge the believers to be holy? Holiness then is a life we choose to live to be consecrated. It is not automatic. How can we then be holy as a believer? It is not by taking kosher food as in Leviticus 11 which was meant for the Israelites. In the new covenant namely 1 Peter, there were ways mentioned. 1) Manner of conversation. 1 Peter 1:15. How we speak and the words we use can be set apart for God. That is why James stated that the tongue as a small member can direct the whole body. 2) The wife's subjection to husband and Husband love to the wife and all unity without grumbling as in 1 Peter 3. 3) Present our body as a living sacrifice. Romans 12:1. What we ingest into our minds and learning. 4) Care for the things of God.1 Corinthians 7:34. Hence living a holy life now is in a manner of conduct and the choice we make and not what we consume. May we all learn to live holy lives after being cleansed by the blood of Jesus. It does not happen naturally. It is a proactive setting apart of conduct that is consecrated for God. This is what it means by yielding more and more to the Holy Spirit. Be holy.
