Stingy

In the book The Prodigal God by Timothy Keller, different angles were expounded on the passage commonly known as the prodigal son. It was an excellent revisit of this parable. What stood out to me from this book was the elder brother. Someone who was with the Father all this while who missed the point. To the elder son, he had a stingy father. A father who refused to give a goat for him to celebrate with his friends. A father who withheld his possessions from him. A father who did not display generosity to him. A father who favors the younger brother. The elder son deemed that he had to work to earn his share, favor, and acceptance. All because he had a stingy father. In the story, the father made a remarkable statement. Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is yours. Have we ever ponder that statement? Jesus, who died for us not just cleansed us from sin, but opened up an unlimited resource for us. To be the kind of person God wants us to be. More importantly to share these resources with others. "All I have is yours" should be a mark of a believers' life. God the Father is not stingy. He has given us all the resources we need to do His work. I have 3 children, they need not work to earn their identity as my children. They do not need to work to earn our favor. They do not have to doubt that we will provide all the resources they need to grow and learn. To do that will be tragic. We will not give them a project without giving all the support they need to get it accomplished. That is parental love. When we call God our Heavenly Father, may we also live as His children. Fully trust, fully belong, fully loved, and fully provided.
