In John 11, the story was written when Lazarus was very sick to the verge of dying and news of his condition was brought to Jesus. We were told that Jesus loved Lazarus very much and what we would normally do when we received such news like this is to make haste to pay a visit. To much surprise, Jesus stayed 2 more days where he was.
By the time Jesus reached Lazarus, the dead Lazarus had already been laid in the tomb for 4 days. All hope of was gone as Lazarus was dead. Everyone knew Jesus could have healed Lazarus if Jesus had arrived earlier. Many would consider Jesus as being late. Too late to heal.
Isn't death the end of all of us? Not to Jesus. Instead of healing Lazarus, Jesus raised him from the dead. A much more powerful testimony of himself and this marks the 7th miracle of Jesus in the gospel of John.
When all hope was lost, Jesus did something better than their expectations. The people cried because of sickness and death, Jesus cried for sin which caused death. To Jesus, his task was to meet the demand of sin and death for you and I. What Jesus did on the cross was better than healing.
