Many Wrongs Can Be Done in the name of Protecting Truth

In Mark 7 there the teachers of the law raised questions about why Jesus' disciples do not follow the traditions of the elders. Jesus' response was stunning. Instead of provided a straightforward answer, his reply taught us that the law was given to benefit us and not God. While the teachers of the law regarding clean food to be essential to keep one clean before God, Jesus reminded them that it is what comes out of oneself that defiles a person. It is so easy to miss the point. This record raises questions as to why we held some of our convictions and when someone violates them we become angry easily. Missing the point can get the worst of us just as it did to the teachers of the law at that time. Many wrongs can be done in the name of protecting the truth. Countless lives had been lost in the battle for truth. Those who took lives believed they do so to protect the truth while years later, the truth revealed that they had missed the point. May we be reminded that Jesus is the truth and He chose to love then to condemn when He decided to submit to the cross. His most powerful words were recorded in Luke 23:34a KJV Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
