Jesus spoke of 3 parables concerning loss and found in Luke 15. Parables, like masterpieces, draw us back to them again and again.
There were some patterns in the 3 parables which may be interesting to note.
The numerical comparison went from big to small.
The sheeps were 100:1
The coins was 10:1 and
The sons were 2:1
Could it be that Jesus knew that ratio affects our attitude towards the things we have? What is 1 out of hundred compared to 1 out of 2?
Also, there have been discussions about the significance of the coins. When the women found the coin, it was unlikely she will spend more to celebrate with her friends unless the coin was of greater value. Some believe that the ancient Jewish married women were given a 10 coin headband. Each coin signifies something towards her husband like faithfulness and such. Hence loosing the coin is like losing the wedding ring. Some dismiss this as a myth as Jewish women wear coverings for her head.
It is interesting to note, however, that in some scripture passages the headdress (headband or tablets) was mentioned.
Isaiah 3:20; Exodus 35:22 and Numbers 31:50.
Whatever that may be, it must be emphasized that it costed more for the person who loses the items than the one which was found.
May we learn that God's heart goes out to seek the lost and longs to find them. May that motivates us to impact lives more often than we do.
