The name of Jesus is so commonly used these days. Some bring honor but some bring dishonor. There was a time the name of Jesus was used to drive out demons. Jesus disciples, also known as apostles, healed sickness and drove out demons. It soon became known that there is power in the name of Jesus. There was a case however, that the evil spirit did not oblige to the use of Jesus' name.
Acts 19:13-17 KJV
Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. And the evil spirit answered and said Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus, and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
It is important to note that the evil spirit, demon, knew who Jesus was. Interestingly the evil spirit also knew who Paul was. However, it has no clue who the chief of the priests was! This raises the question," Do devils know you?" Apparently, that question is an important one.
When we belong to Jesus there is a change in our spiritual identity. That is why the evil spirit was able to distinguish Paul as God's adopted child. Paul then has the right to use his father Jesus's name with power and authority.
May we examine our hearts to see if we have full trust our savior Jesus Christ. This is so important not because we can cast out devils but that we belong to God the heavenly Father.Luke 10:17-20 KJV And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and overall the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
