In Luke 10 Jesus told a parable. Parables were meant to be hard to understand. They are like a masterpiece that can be visited again and again.
There were 4 characters mentioned. The injured person, the Priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan.
As the story goes the Priest and Levite walked pass the injured person without giving help but the Samaritan offered practical help to the injured man with oil and wine. The elements were of great significance to the story.
Oil was to be burnt in the temple of God day and night. The Priest was to keep the temple's lamp burning. He used oil so often in the temple but the oil was not useful outside his priestly territory. The Samaritan, however, uses this priestly item for the help of the needful injured man. Exodus 23, 30 & 35.
The wine was part of the offering at the feast of the tabernacle. An important event where Levites run the operations. The wine was a common item used by the Levites in the feasts. In the story, the Levites were so accustomed to using wine for the celebration that he cannot relate wine as an ointment to bring relief.
The Samaritan, however, used the wine in benefit for the injured. Wine eases pain. The Samaritan used the items meant for celebration to meet the needs of the injured man. Deuteronomy 16.
There are many injured men and women outside the church today. May every believer whom the Bible calls Priests to be wise to use the oil and wine in ways to bring help and healing to the world. That the world may know that the body of Christ is here for them.
