From Reed to Rock

20140416-084959.jpg In the books of the gospel, we noticed that demons knew who Jesus was but people did not. Not even the disciples understood who their Rabbi was. At Caesarea Philippi, things took a turn and Jesus's ministry took a turn as well when He sets his focus to face the cross. Simon was named Peter at Caesarea Philippi. It was the first time that Jesus was confessed as the Messiah - the Son of the living God. Jesus knew it was time for building His church. The church must be built on this truth. Simon means Reed. Reed was used in the scripture as a measuring device and it was held in Jesus's right hand in Matthew 27:29. Most significantly, Reed was used as a symbol of weakness, namely, broken reed. Peter means rock. Rock was used in the scripture as a refuge, strong foundation, the supply of food (Deut 32:13) and many times figuratively as God is solid and sure. As we journey into Good Friday, remember Jesus focused on what He was called to do when Simon became Peter. When Reed became Rock. May we examine who Jesus means to us and are we turning from our weakness in the flesh to the strength in the Spirit of God. May your journey towards Good Friday and Easter be not a day but a journey. Shalom.
