All of us at one point or another hates the law. It restricts us from doing what we enjoy at times. Laws are mostly seen as negative as they are associated with punishment and penalties most of the time. But the truth of the matter is, the law works for us or against us.
When law worked for us, we usually take it for granted. An example is the law against stealing. If someone takes our possession without permission, we can call in the police and the thief will get certain punishment while we get our items back. We have no trouble with the law against stealing.
But when the law worked against us, we quickly criticize the law. A few weeks back my wife and I bought two skate scooters for the family. They gave us many hours of fun together as a family. We ensure the children wear safety gear and reflective strips were installed along with the light in front. My children's friends come almost every day to enjoy these new toys with my children and that took off some time they spent on electronic games which parents like us have a hard time combating. Then came an article in the papers stating that skate scooters are banned in Singapore. The whole family was upset. Notwithstanding the money spent, the children lost precious moments with friends outdoors.
To us, that was a lousy law because it worked against us, and many speculations of why that law was passed lingered in the family. While the speculations might not be true, they affected us.
A few weeks passed and as I ponder about this, I realized that if we had not bought the two skate scooters we might not have been bothered about the law which banned skate scooters. It was when the law worked against us where we got upset and deemed it unfair. I still hope the government will give some avenue for the skate scooters to be used in Singapore.
Now about the law of God. God is good and just and His laws were considered perfect by the Hebrews. (Psalms 19 & James 1)
It is when we broke the law and fail to keep it the law is then unable to redeem us. The law itself is still good because it is set by a good God (1 Timothy 1:8). Let us not get upset against the law because it works against us but recognizes that the law has its place and is also work for us on countless occasions which we took for granted.
May we learn to appreciate the laws of God which the Good Lord has established to teach his creation the best way to live.
