Judas is regarded as the greatest betrayer ever lived. He knew Jesus, walked with Him, ate with Him, and did many things with Him. He was in the inner circle whereby many envied. Yet he did the most unthinkable thing. He betrayed the Lord.
There are many suggested reasons why Judas did what he did. Some say he was a greedy person and others say he was a zealot who wanted to corner Jesus into fighting the Romans. In Matthew 26 we can see a good one.
Matthew 26:6-14 recorded that in a gathering there was a woman who came and anointed the Lord with very expensive perfume. The disciples were indignant. They shouted in protest about the waste. The perfume costs much and money is very useful for the poor. Jesus' mission always includes the poor. The disciples cannot comprehend this wastage. Jesus rebuked them sharply to leave the woman alone, Â explaining to them that they will not always have Him around hence the woman has done a good thing.
The next moment Judas went to the chief priest and agreed to betray Jesus.
We see that Judas had a change of heart right after this incident. Could it be that he felt the Lord was deviating from His mission of ministering to the poor? When the mission becomes more important than the Messiah, dissatisfaction could grow and could bloom into hate which could result in betrayal. This might be what happened to Judas.
May we in our journey learn first to be contented with the Messiah. Mission resulted from this contentment keep us faithful to the Messiah even when events turn out not as we perceived.
