We echo quotes and at times these quotes are not adequate to reflect Biblical truth. "God helps those who help themselves" is one of those quotes used commonly by Christians. While we know the intention of this quote is to discourage laziness, it creates a smokescreen to the truth of scriptures - God helps those who humble themselves.
C.J. Mahaney in his book Humility: True Greatness highlighted this fundamental fact that we can all possess the love for God, zeal for His work, cravings for the truth, and faithful in fellowship and yet not have humility. That is an awakening thought.
As a disciple, we must hold fast to the promises of scriptures instead of wise quotes. And this is what the Bible has to say about the attitude that attracts God's help.
James 4:6 KJVS
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
James 4:10 KJVS
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
1 Peter 5:5 KJVS
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
1 Peter 5:6 KJVS
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
Scriptures have repeatedly called us to humble ourselves and when scriptures emphasize something, it is usually a case of negligence in our lives. Notice also that humility attracts God's response. He promises to give grace, to lift up, and to exalt! Aren't those what we needed many moments of our lives?
May we stop telling ourself that God help those who help themself but tell ourself that God help those who humble themself.
