Receive or Embrace

For many of us, the word of God is accessible in our days. For those living in a country that Bibles are not banned, we have more than one Bible in our possession. In many countries, there are Bible colleges and churches with more denominations than one can choose. In a country like Singapore, many of us receive the word in many forms. From the morning WhatsApp greetings which often flood Christian chat groups, Facebook posts from online "evangelist", from our Bible apps and for some, from the reading of the Bible. Why is it that the overloads of the word do not seem to take effects in the lives of Christians? The problem lies in the soil and not the seed. The life of David gives everyone hope. He started great as a child and in his youth, he became a hero by killing a giant enemy. But one day he broke 5 of God's law in a single day. God sent a prophet to rebuke him and he repented dearly thereafter. David wrote many Psalms. And the longest Psalm in the Bible is chapter 119. We do not know if David contributed to Psalm 119, but we can definitely feel the sentiments in David's heart when we read Psalm 119. It is done in the Hebrew Alef-Bet or in our English terms, the alphabet. If you read through them, you will notice that the major theme of Psalm 119 is on the embracing of God's word. Walking in His ways, keeping God's law in your heart, delight in His word, teach me your precepts, I forget not your precepts.... not only dis the Psalmist place the emphasis on receiving the word, but the psalmist also embraces the word with all his heart. Receiving is simply not enough, we have to embrace the word. This is much needed in our days because receiving the seed is not an issue but having good soil is. This reminds us of the parable that our Lord Jesus spoke about the sower. There are different kinds of soil but the same seed, which is the word of God, was sowed among them. Yet only the good soil bear fruit. Matthew 4.
May we take a moment to reflect upon what we have received recently and to embrace it dearly. Write it down, memorise it, live in expectation that promises will be fulfilled, weak will be strengthened, chains will be broken, lives will be transformed and hope will arrive. Embrace the word of the Lord for faithful is He and His word will always come to pass.
