Timothy Keller, the author of the book Counterfeit Gods, taught that our gospel must be delivered with the wisdom to:
Discern Idols - To identify the idols in our lives and the lives of others. Anything that is placed higher than God Himself is an idol. Idols can be a physical thing or a person, it can be exalting an idea or thoughts above God or in fact anything to you of ultimate value above God can be an idol.
Exposing Idols - Confront the idols in your life. It is not enough to identify them. It is important to confront them. We shunt difficult situations. No one likes confrontation. However, confronting idols is necessary. Paul confronted idols everywhere he goes in the book of Acts. Perhaps that is why he is the most important missionary God had ever used.
Destroy Idols - The time has come that a decision must be made. Serve God or money, serve God or Baal, serve God or the Golden Calf, serve God or yourself. Everything must be placed under God now or later. Hence the person who learns to place everything under God now tastes God's presence and delight. Jesus emptied Himself and found Himself with God everywhere He went and in all that He did God's power was with Him. And He emptied that too when He was hung on the cross for us crying, "My God, my God, why have Ye forsaken me?"
May we learn to be the kind of people who discern idols, expose idols, and destroy idols in both our lives and the lives of others.
