Communion

The institution of the Holy Communion is brilliant. We celebrate this meal in churches all over the world. Remembering our savior Jesus Christ. It carries significant few words that can express. It reminds partakers that the meal is made possible because of what Jesus had done with His Body and Blood for the redemption of sinners. Why did Jesus choose to use a meal instead of other ways to communicate this? After all the significant is to remember what He did, right? Why not a kind of physical souvenir of some sort to help us remember him personally? Maybe we should start asking what situation will cause us not to partake in the Lord's supper. This lesson came to me when someone I know decided not to partake in the Lord's supper. She deemed God will not be pleased because there were certain issues yet to be resolved and coming to the Lord's table will dilute its significance. I began to ask myself what will cause me not to partake in this meal. It was then I begin to appreciate the wonders of the meal. The Lord chose a meal because people enjoy meals, especially when the meal is surrounded with people you are comfortable with. Supper is a meal we have in addition to our breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In our culture supper is usually a specially organized meal as it is not part of our usual diet (I am not speaking for everyone). I begin to have this struggle because I know there are people that I would rather not have supper with, but in the Lord's supper, I look past those barriers and decided that Christ is larger than those barriers. Jesus chose the last supper. Last. Will all grievances matters if that was the last time you are dining with him or her? It doesn't anymore because you will not have another opportunity to eat like this anymore. Last is powerful. Maybe when we take the communion, we should ask ourselves will we enjoy supper with the same people around? Or do you think communion is just between you and God? We must learn to look beyond the bread and the cup that it was meant for - a Christ-honoring fellowship around the table where everyone enjoys everyone.
