We live in a world where companies spend millions on advertising. Commercial seeks to bombard us with a loud repeated message to make us feel we can be better, happier, wiser, faster, younger, healthier, stronger along with more charm, more character, more powerful, more leverage, and more productivity.
Our brains somehow respond to such messages while we try to live out our faith as a believer of Jesus. We form our own set of standards on security, comfort, and sadly, spirituality.
Conformity to the world was a huge problem both in ancient times and the present. In Romans 12 we are advised not to conform to the pattern of the world. Question is do Christianity and church have certain practices that are shaped by a certain pattern? The answer is an astounding Yes!
From worship to the sharing of the gospel and to prayers, there are certain patterns that Christian expected it to be done. Doing certain things a certain way seemed to be more acceptable and right than other ways. Could that be a sign of conformity? How many Christian never go pass the few bible verses in their years of the Christian walk?
Mimicking towards success is vastly taught by a success coach. However, the way of Jesus seemed to be the opposite of the common practices in His time. What if what we have been doing is not what Jesus had in mind? Believers must guard against commercial Christianity. What is the "in things" the church is adopting churches now? What are the most popular songs now? What are the most popular Christian books now? Seeking all these instead in place of what God requires of us would be dreadful. The Internet can become our oracle instead of God. This too is a form of commercial Christianity.
We replace God seeking prayers with a few clicks on the Internet and the articles we surf become our latest theology and believe.
May we rise above commercial Christianity and seek God daily with prayers and may I say, fasting. Hear me speedily, O Lord: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee. Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies: I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. Quicken me, O Lord, for thy name's sake: for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble. (Psalm 143:7-11 KJV)
